O Produtor, tasting note published in December 14th 2021

With its deep ruby colour, this wine is distinguished by its highly complex aromas of red forest fruits and aromatic herbs. It is a supple, long and very elegant red wine. It combines the sweetness of ripe grapes with austere tannins and acidity. A perfect balance between the strength and elegance so typical of great Douro wines.

Vale do Inferno

The red wine Quinta de La Rosa Vale do Inferno is highly concentrated and powerful – an exceptional wine from an exceptional vineyard.

Production:
100% Touriga Nacionalfrom old vines. Grapes are foot trodden in granite lagares and fermented in stainless steel tanks before aging for 16 months in French oak barrels (40% first use).

Terroir:
Although the Douro is a very ancient region, thanks to its large size and enormous diversity of terroirs, there is still much to explore. Quinta de La Rosa is a good example of this diversity, with vineyards ranging from about 100 meters in altitude, along the river in the imposing Vale do Inferno, to 500 meters in altitude in the Lamelas vineyard. Always with a privileged view of the Douro River, all the grapes from the Quinta are classified as letter A – the best that the region has to offer.
The poor and schistous soils, combined with varied topography, favor full-bodied wines with excellent levels of minerality, acidity, and freshness.
This combination of complexity and power, achieved when we have good ripening, and the elegance and freshness so characteristic of our Quinta, have made our wines famous. Our wines have elegance in expressing the terroir without exaggeration of ripeness, extraction, tannins, or wood. Most of the grapes for this wine come from the best vineyards of the Quinta, notably Vale do Inferno and Vinha Grande.

Perfect Pairings:
Elaborate red meats, such as Beef Wellington; Pigeon and similar dishes; Strong cheeses.

Quinta de La Rosa

Quinta de la Rosa has been in the Bergqvist family since 1906, although they have been in the port trade as shippers under the family name, Feueheerd, since 1815. It currently has around 55 hectares under vine and produces around 50,000 litres of port and 160,000 litres of table wine each year.

Quinta de la Rosa was given as a christening present for Claire Feueheerd, Sophia’s grandmother, in 1906. The family port shipping company, Feueheerd, was sold in the 1930s but La Rosa was kept and run by Sophia’s grandmother, Claire. In 1988 Sophia and her father, Tim Bergqvist, decided to restart the family business and launched Quinta de la Rosa as a top quality port producer onto the market place.

Starting in the early 1990s, the Bergqvist famuly were one of the pioneers in taking red wine production in the Douro region seriously. Quinta de la Rosa’s wines, both red and white, have won many accolades in the press and are sold in many prestigious restaurants and wine stores around the world. Since 2002, Jorge Moreira, one of the finest wine makers in Portugal, has been making wines at La Rosa.

Quinta de la Rosa is situated in Northern Portugal, 100kms inland from Oporto. It is set in the heart of the Alto Douro ‘A’ grade port growing area and is located along the banks of the river, near Pinhão.
