O Produtor, tasting note published in November 5th 2009

Citrine color with an exotic and warm nose where subtle wood brings out the traditional aromas of passion fruit and melon from the grape variety. In the mouth, it is unctuous revealing a deliberately sweet character well balanced by a harmonious acidity.

Casas Altas

aThe landscape of Beira Interior is dramatic and sparsely populated, with demanding climate, granitic soils, and high altitudes. Vineyards coexist with meadows, olive groves, and diverse forests, at an altitude of over 650 meters, on granitic soils, with sun exposure from the northeast and southeast, experiencing significant temperature variations between day and night. Ripening periods are traditionally long. A unique Terroir that imparts distinctive qualities to Casas Altas wines. It is here that the Casas Altas Chardonnay White Wine is born.

Produced in the Rogenda Vineyard, in Pinhel, it is an oxidative white wine that aged in French oak barrels for 6 months.

It should be served slightly chilled and pairs well with dishes such as Thai curry or European duck magret. Traditional roasted cod does it justice. It is a wine without season, equally enjoyable in the heat of summer and the cold of winter.

José Madeira Afonso

A physician by profession, an oenologist by passion, João Madeira Afonso and his brother, upon inheriting their father’s vineyards, felt that it would be sad and lacking in interest to cultivate the vines with care only to deliver the grapes to the cooperative. Thus, the first red wine was born in 1994.

The vineyards are spread across three plots in the Pinhel sub-region: Rogenda, Mortórios, and Quinta do Vale do Ruivo, totaling approximately 16 hectares. Of these, 7 hectares are dedicated to old vines, where traditional Portuguese native grape varieties are mixed, with Baga and Rufete dominating for reds, and Síria, Arinto, and Fonte Cal for whites. Among the others, we find no less important Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Franca, Chardonnay, Riesling, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Verdelho.

It is from the grapes of this terroir that José Madeira Afonso creates DOC Beira Interior wines that are the true expression of the best the region has to offer.
