O Produtor, tasting note published in November 18th 2020

The Capensis Fijnbosch Chardonnay aims to highlight the pinnacle of purity from a singular site within the Stellenbosch District and is exclusively produced by our winemaker, Graham Weerts, during exceptional harvests. While our flagship wine, Capensis Western Cape Chardonnay, comes from specific vineyard sites across the Western Cape, the grapes for this wine are sourced exclusively from the "Flowers" block on the Fijnbosch estate vineyard. Planted at 600 meters altitude, this block is home to the highest planted vines in the Stellenbosch District.

Special consideration is given in the selection of each vine that becomes part of this blend to ensure that depth, finesse, and quality at the highest level are evident in the glass. Intense and concentrated, the 2015 Fijnbosch Chardonnay opens with aromas of toasted brioche, lime, satsuma, and ripe orange peel. The density continues on a palate rich in marmalade and a long mineral finish accentuated by a seam of acidity that maintains tightly woven tension and length.

Capensis

Due to its unique nature, this wine is limited to approximately 100 cases produced in any given harvest.

Capensis comes from the Latin word meaning “from the cape.” And it’s an expressive Chardonnay of the terroir that honors the ancestral greatness of South Africa – a world-class Chardonnay producer.

It’s a 400-year story of grape growing that leads to a contemporary renaissance of terroir-driven wines.

Wine production in the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, dates back to 1600, when the vineyards supplied wine to ships of the Dutch East India Company en route to India. In the 1700s and early 1800s, South Africa was known for its dessert wines based on Muscat of Constantia, which were coveted throughout Europe.

With the end of apartheid in 1994, South Africa’s remarkable wine-growing potential became known outside the country, and viticulturists began researching and selecting the best grape varieties. The commitment to Chardonnay comes from the belief that the true great terroirs around the world are revealed by only a few noble grape varieties.

The Western Cape region of South Africa can be considered both the oldest wine region of the New World and the newest of the Old World. Capensis skillfully combines these two aspects – the oldest and the newest – incorporating the incomparable quality that comes from ancient, gnarled vines planted in some of the world’s oldest soils, and representing the energy of a new generation of winemakers determined to make world-class wines with state-of-the-art techniques.

Jackson Family Wines

We see possibilities in a handful of earth. We have been a family-owned business since we planted our first vine in 1974. Wine is our passion, and from this passion arises our multigenerational vision to cultivate wines of distinction, conduct business ethically, and empower our people.

It has been a labor of love to care for and build our vineyards and estates. Inspired by the age-old principle that great wines can only come from great vineyards, we sought out the cool, coastal ridges around the world in search of some of the best vineyard land. Each of our wineries has its own fingerprint and style, driven by the terroir of our family-owned vineyards and the trust we have in our winemakers to pursue their philosophies for distinguished wines.

Mountains, hills, ridges, and benches. It is in these places that Jess Jackson, our husband, father, grandfather, and founder believed grew the finest grapes for the most exceptional wines in the world. It is here that we began our journey of wine, family, art, and responsible winemaking.
