O Produtor, tasting note published in February 23rd 2024

Very attractive in its pale straw-yellow color, it reveals a good aromatic intensity, with floral notes and white fruit. The whole is marked by freshness and minerality, with lively acidity and a medium body with a fine texture, supported by quality fruit. The finish is vibrant and crisp.

Quinta das Cazas Novas

In Santa Marinha do Zêzere, in the municipality of Baião, in the southeastern part of the Vinho Verde Demarcated Region and already within the Douro Valley, the Cazas Novas project was born — an invitation to explore one of Portugal’s most exciting white grape varieties: Avesso.

The name Cazas Novas is inspired by one of the family’s centuries-old estates. The Cunha Coutinho family has, for seven generations, cultivated the largest single area of Avesso vines in Baião — a true treasure of 24 hectares, located in what is considered the prime area for this distinctive variety.

In this transitional zone between Vinho Verde and Douro, with the river as both backdrop and influence, the hillside vineyards on granite soils face significant thermal amplitude, creating a unique terroir. Here, Avesso wines express freshness, minerality, and remarkable aging potential.

In recent years, the focus on the Avesso grape has made viticulture a central priority. Most of the vineyard now lies within the iconic Quinta de Guimarães, a family property for over 150 years and, since 2005, also a rural tourism estate. Its baroque manor house enhances the estate’s cultural and architectural heritage.

Together with Quinta das Cazas Novas, Quinta de Guimarães, and two other Douro-facing estates — Quinta do Adro and Quinta das Tias — the Cunha Coutinho family oversees over 100 hectares of agricultural and forest land, of which 24 hectares are exclusively dedicated to cultivating the Avesso grape.

The first wine was bottled in 2008, with a symbolic production of 3333 bottles. From 2011 onward, with the arrival of winemaker Diogo Lopes and Vasco Magalhães, a detailed study of the Avesso grape was launched, laying the foundation for the current wine project — a partnership of four entrepreneurs: Carlos Coutinho (agricultural and financial management), Diogo Lopes (winemaking and viticulture), Vasco Magalhães (commercial and marketing management) and André Miranda (production and operations).
