Almaviva
EPU 2020, Almaviva’s second wine, is a sublime and accessible vintage to discover the perfection of the star estate’s wines from Puente Alto.
The name of the “younger brother” of the classic Almaviva originates from the indigenous Mapuche language, in which Epu means two. According to Luis Gutierrez from Wine Advocate, “it is a second wine, but they also want to do something different, and the Epu is perhaps a bit more classic, maybe more Bordeaux-like, while the Almaviva is more Chilean.”
The vineyard is located in the highest part of the Maipo Valley, in the central region of Chile, known for having ideal conditions to produce one of the best Cabernet Sauvignons in Chile. The stony and very poor soils, the cold and rainy winters, and a long ripening season characterized by cool nights and temperate summer days allow for extraordinary quality. A determining factor in this extraordinary terroir is the cool influence of the Andes Mountains, which manifests itself in the form of cool breezes and a wide temperature differential between day and night, particularly important during the ripening period. These conditions favor a slow and homogeneous ripening of the grapes, a more pronounced acidity, fresh red fruit, and a greater concentration of color and aromas in the clusters.
Epu 2020 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (81%), Carménère (12%), Merlot (5%), and Cabernet Franc (2%). The wine is aged in one-year-old French oak barrels that were used to age the estate’s first wine for 12 months.
