Villa Maria
A classic expression of Sauvignon Blanc from the Wairau Valley in Marlborough, full of tropical fruit characteristics typical of this warmer sub-region, made from a selection of premium vineyards throughout the Wairau Valley, each contributing unique attributes to create this complex and flavourful wine.
The growing season in Marlborough started well, with very little frost pressure during spring. Flowering proceeded smoothly and, thanks to healthy soil moisture levels, the vine canopies appeared lush and vibrant. The start of the 2023 summer was mild, with unseasonably humid and rainy weather, presenting some challenges. Meticulous vineyard management was essential to keep the vines healthy and develop the desired flavours in the grapes. In February, the weather stabilized, providing us with warm and sunny autumn conditions ideal for our fruit.
According to Cameron Douglas, this wine shows a ripe, voluptuous, varietal, and inviting bouquet, with aromas and flavours of angelica herb and passion fruit, ripe peach and mango, crisp apple, and grapefruit. On the palate it is saline, fresh and dry, with a core of ripe orchard fruits, plenty of citrus, and some herbaceous qualities. Balanced, long, and delicious, with the best drinking window between 2024 and 2029.
It pairs perfectly with fresh seafood such as sautéed scallops or grilled snapper, accompanied by a fresh salad of rocket, goat cheese, and melon.
