Val Moreira

Designation of Origin (DOC): Douro

Region: Cima Corgo and Douro Superior

Vintage Year: The winter of 2023 brought significant rainfall, above average for the Douro region, which helped replenish soil moisture levels. However, from February to August, precipitation was scarce, except for some intense episodes of rain and hail, especially in May and June. Despite these climatic challenges, the vine cycle advanced early, with the harvest beginning in August. The harvest was long and selective, with each plot picked at the ideal time to maximize quality. The combination of winter rains and efficient management of climatic conditions throughout the cycle resulted in a successful harvest and an excellent yield.

Winemaking: The grapes were manually harvested into 20 kg boxes and stored at 4°C in a refrigerated room for 24 hours before being processed. They were then gently pressed and the must was statically decanted. Fermentation took place in French oak casks (20%) and stainless steel tanks (80%).

Aging: The wine aged on fine lees for 9 months, partly in stainless steel and partly in French oak casks.

Food Pairing Suggestions: It pairs perfectly with appetizers, fish dishes, white meats, cheeses, and even apple tart.

Val Moreira

It is one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in history, dating back more than 250 years. It is located in the northeast of the Portuguese territory and develops through the Douro River valley.

Located on the south bank of the Douro River, in Cima-Corgo, Quinta do Val Moreira was bought by XVINUS in 2018 and redeveloped for wine tourism. It has 23 hectares dedicated to Douro wine production, 2 hectares of olive groves and 2 hectares of almond trees. It offers a fantastic view over the valley, where the Douro River and the Tedo River are protagonists.

Quinta do Val Moreira appears on an old map of the 19th century, the map of the Baron of Forrester. An important figure in the Douro Wine Region, he had a dream of making the Douro River navigable and safe all the way to the Spanish border. This map earned him the reputation of cartographer and the title of Baron.

Today, the quinta develops from the north side of Marmelal, a very old settlement whose charter by D. Sancho I dates back to 1194. This royal document included our main vineyards and land facing Tedo and the Quintas of Naples and Carril.

Part of our vineyards are located in another tributary valley of the Douro, which had one of the largest water lines between Marmelal and Folgosa. These vineyards are adjacent to the ruins of the old house of the “Quinta de Valmor”, which is said to have belonged to the Viscount of Valmor, where he was awarded the prestigious Lisbon and Portuguese prize in architecture.

There are two Pombaline markers in the area, one of them near the small village of Marmelal, the Quinta do Val Moreira and the Ribeira do Carril. These granite milestones are classified as property of public interest. Ordered to be built by the Marquis of Pombal in 1757, they served to demarcate the area of the Douro fortified wines, placed under the jurisdiction of the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Douro. The first demarcated wine region in the world was thus created, a historical fact that makes the Douro people very proud.
