O Produtor, tasting note published in February 24th 2025

Orange in colour, with marked oxidative aromas and a slight hint of orange blossom. On the palate, it surprises with its unusual combination of structure, acidity, and salinity.

Ramilo

DOC Colares, produced using organic production methods.

Winemaking: From our Malvasias of Colares (2016 to 2020), we collected the lees that, over time, settled at the bottom of the barrels. These were then subjected to a second decantation by the action of gravity, from which we extracted this wine. Average aging of 4 years in barrels. Winemaking by Jorge Mata.

A wine to pair with intense cheeses, which also pairs wonderfully with desserts.

In the Público newspaper, on February 6, 2025, Edgardo Pacheco describes this wine as: “A great wine, a tribute to the boldness and irreverence of both the winemaker and the producer.” (…) “It is something between a Jerez (Spanish) and a Jura (French), although it perhaps leans more towards the latter. Since the wine developed a flor veil in the barrel (a whitish layer of yeasts that covers the wine), we have notes of dried fruits and citrus fruits. On the palate, it’s somewhat fortified, reminiscent of fruitcake, with great balance between acidity, alcohol, and structure. Made from five harvests of Malvasia, it is extremely challenging with cheeses.”

Ramilo Wines

Since 1937, the Ramilo family has been dedicated to wine on the Atlantic coast between Colares and Mafra, once one of Portugal’s most famous wine regions. Four generations later, dissatisfied with the abandonment of local traditions, brothers Pedro and Nuno Ramilo left everything and returned to their origins. They faced blockades, moved stones and mountains, rehabilitated farms, saved old vineyards and replanted new ones. They rescued from oblivion the true vines of Colares and the noble varieties of the region.
