Olho de Mocho
The oldest vineyard at Herdade do Rocim has always been affectionately called “Olho de Mocho” (“Owl’s Eye”), due to the abundance of this spontaneous wildflower, scientifically named Tolpis barbata. Because it is so special, it could only give rise to a unique and authentic wine, which we now call “Olho de Mocho Single Vineyard.”
It is in this old vineyard that the Antão Vaz grape variety is found, in a plot with slight east-facing exposure and row orientation running north-south.
The climate is typically Mediterranean, in the Vidigueira sub-region, where weather conditions are the mildest in Alentejo, creating an ideal microclimate for producing high-quality wines. The soils are low in fertility, sandy-loam of granitic origin, offering great potential for vine cultivation and the production of exceptional wines.
Vinification: Hand-harvested into 12 kg boxes in the early hours of August 17, 2023.
After 24 hours of cold skin maceration, fermentation took place in 500 L French oak barrels and cement vats over 15 days at controlled temperature. At the end of fermentation, the wine underwent daily bâtonnage.
