O Produtor, tasting note published in July 28th 2022

The Mirabilis Branco is a sublime wine, delicate and crisp on the palate, made from grapes from small, centuries-old vineyards where Viosinho and Gouveio dominate, along with numerous other extremely low-yielding varieties, almost extinct in the region. The selected wood is intentionally second and third year, with only a small percentage of new wood, to avoid dominating and to slowly integrate the intense fruit. The focus is on French and Hungarian oak, resulting in an extremely elegant wine where freshness and acidity intertwine.

Mirabilis

Mirabilis, as the Latin name suggests, is a wonderful wine. Since 2008, a detailed study was initiated to explore the possibility of producing a Great White from the Douro, with meticulous work in the relentless search for smallholders of old and very old vines. This project involved several years of studying bottle aging of different batches to understand the perfect marriage with wood. A long journey to Burgundy brought the final touch needed to create a dream white wine.

The clusters are small, tight, with delicate berries, resulting in a production of no more than 2100 kg per hectare. The vineyards are located on soils above 650 meters in altitude, geologically classified as schist/granite transition soils, in the parishes of Vilar de Maçada, Cabeda, Tabuaço, and Candedo. These conditions give the musts an impressive authenticity.

The year 2021 was marked by some climatic instability, where deep knowledge of the vineyards and human experience were critical factors for good forecasting and execution of the harvest. During the vegetative cycle, it will be remembered as a cool year, with a mild summer without the usual heatwaves, and a harvest period with some precipitation. The cool nights contributed to slow maturation, favoring grape balance and preserving primary aromas.

It was a challenging year with strong character that produced excellent white wines, full of freshness, minerality, aromatic intensity, juicy texture, and firm structure.

Winemaking notes:
Whole grape pressing.
Aging: end of alcoholic fermentation and 9 months in French oak barrels (Tronçais, Vosges, Nevers, Jura) and Hungarian oak, with biweekly bâtonnage during the first 5 months.

Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo

Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo is a place of extreme beauty in the heart of Douro valley and owned by Amorim family since 1999.
The family connection to the wine comes from afar, through its connection with the export houses of Vila Nova de Gaia in the cork business. Meanwhile the dream came true and the project is now in the hands of the 4th generation of the family.
With a story longer than 250 years, the property displays conserved structures and the cellar original building from 1764, after interventions by the architect Arnaldo Barbosa.
But the «quinta» is much earlier than this and history confirms it as a great land belonging to the Portuguese Royal House, having been identified its first owner in 1725.
The winery produced more than 3,500 barrels of wine from neighboring estates and it was soon ‘integrated in the first demarcation of the region’. The historic sites that are still preserved give notice to this historic weight.
An entrepreneur spirit and family vision did however the difference because, combined with a passionate commitment to the future, determined the beginning of multiple changes to a path of oenological excellence.
