DOC Vinho Verde – Alvarinho, Monção and Melgaço

White wine made exclusively from the noble Alvarinho grape, sourced from Quinta da Torre in Monção. The diversity of soils across the estate’s plots allows the creation of a rich and complex wine. This profile reflects years of in-depth research by Anselmo Mendes into Alvarinho’s fermentation and barrel-aging potential.

Winemaking: Grapes are hand-harvested in small boxes and swiftly transported to the winery. Very gentle pressing of whole, destemmed grapes. Extended cold settling. Fermentation in used 400-litre French oak barrels. Aged for 9 months in barrel with full lees stirring (bâtonnage). Further aged for 9 months in bottle.

Food Pairing Suggestions: Expressões is a highly gastronomic wine, ideal with codfish dishes or shellfish. Perfect with cod loin in a creamy shrimp and asparagus sauce, or traditional bacalhau à Brás. It also pairs beautifully with soft cheeses. A great starter: camembert puff pastry with honey, walnuts, and rosemary.

Anselmo Mendes

Anselmo Mendes was born and grew up in Monção. It was then, as a child, that he became acquainted with the culture of the vine and wine production. The Alvarinho variety, and its wine produced there, immediately became a part of his life, to the extent that, today, Anselmo Mendes and Alvarinho are synonymous.

He graduated in Agro-Industrial Engineering in 1987, at the Higher Education Institute of the Technical University of Lisbon, and post-graduated in Oenology at the Catholic University six years later.
