Soalheiro
IG Minho. Soalheiro’s first red: a new expression from the Vinho Verde Region
This wine marks an important milestone for the producer, being the very first red wine created by the house known for its Alvarinho excellence. This innovative red is a blend of three indigenous grape varieties from the Vinho Verde region — Alvarelhão, Vinhão, and Alvarinho — resulting in a surprising, fresh, and elegant profile.
The project started in 2013 as a blend of Alvarinho and Vinhão, a bold move to tame Vinhão’s power with Alvarinho’s elegance. Later, Pinot Noir was added for extra softness and balance. Today, the final blend includes Alvarelhão (an ancestral grape), Vinhão (expressive and bold), and Alvarinho (fresh and refined).
The name “Oppaco” reflects the fact that this is Soalheiro’s first-ever red wine — a new chapter with its own soul.
Food pairings:
Soalheiro Oppaco is remarkably food-friendly. Try it with:
Oily fish (tuna, confit cod), white meats (chicken, turkey, duck), red meats (lamb, goat, game), cured cheeses, and traditional Minho dishes like lamprey.
Terroir and winemaking:
Red grapes are sourced from old vines in granite-rich soils and areas with cool nights — ideal for balanced wines with freshness and depth.
Alvarelhão and Vinhão: fully destemmed, with 24–48h cold soak in lagares. Gentle foot treading during fermentation to avoid over-extraction.
Alvarinho: fermented without skin contact, in stainless steel, aged on fine lees.
After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in three types of vessels: stainless steel tank, 12 L French foudre, and French oak barrels.
Total acidity: 5.8 g/dm³ | pH: 3.44 | Residual sugar: Dry | Volatile acidity: 0.57 g/dm³
