O Produtor, tasting note published in April 5th 2024

Attractive, soft copper colour. Expressive aromas of raspberry and strawberry sorbet with subtle notes of watermelon. Mineral freshness with invigorating appeal. Well-defined palate with lively citrus acidity preceding delicate redcurrant and berry flavours. The dry finish underlines the elegance and balance of this wine.

Quinta da Fonte Souto

The name of the estate — Fonte Souto — reflects two key natural elements: Fonte symbolizes the abundance of water, fed by springs within the estate, while Souto refers to the large area covered by chestnut trees.

Our goal at Quinta da Fonte Souto is to produce a distinctive range of estate wines that showcase the very best of Portalegre, the Alentejo, and Portugal.

THE WINE
Quinta da Fonte Souto, with a total area of 207 hectares, was acquired by the Symington family in 2017 and represents our first estate outside the Douro region. Located on the slopes of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park near Portalegre, the vineyards of Fonte Souto — planted between 490 and 550 metres altitude — benefit from cooler and wetter conditions than the hot Alentejo plains. The wines express the freshness and balance typical of high-altitude viticulture, along with the structure and complexity of low-yielding mature vines.

VINIFICATION
The grapes are hand-harvested into small crates and received at the estate’s winery. After manual sorting, they are destemmed and gently crushed before being transferred to a pneumatic press, where they are pressed at low pressure to limit extraction of colour and phenolic compounds. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at low temperatures to preserve the wine’s full aromatic expression. After alcoholic fermentation, the wines are sulphited to prevent malolactic fermentation.

AGEING & BOTTLING
100% stainless steel, to avoid interference with the fruit expression.

Symington Family Estates

There is a natural affinity between wine and family. Long-term vision and commitment through many generations are essential for the success of a family wine company. A newly planted vineyard takes time to produce great wines and often requires a lifetime’s work to yield best results. The Symington family, with Scottish, English and Portuguese ancestry has been present in the Douro for five generations — since 1882 — and through the current generation’s great grandmother, the family’s links to the wines of the Douro span 14 generations, to the mid-17th century and to the very beginnings of the history of Port.
