D. António Luís de Meneses, a native of Cantanhede, was the 1st Marquis of Marialva, a title he received from King Afonso VI in recognition of his valour in command of the Portuguese troops in the battles of the “Lines of Elvas” and “Montes Claros” – the most important battles during the Restoration War (1640-1668), when Portugal definitively regained its independence after 60 years of Spanish rule. We can therefore say that it is to this wine that Portugal exists today as an independent nation!
