James Suckling, tasting note published in September 22nd 2024

Probably one of the most classic and typical Sassicaia vintages, with aromas and flavors of redcurrant, tobacco, chocolate, sage, and lavender. Medium to full-bodied, with very integrated and refined tannins that caress the palate, bringing elegance and softness. It shows remarkable length and beauty—a rare combination of finesse and structure. Best from 2028, but already a tremendous pleasure to enjoy today.

Tenuta San Guido

The 1968 harvest marked the debut of Sassicaia. The name “Sassicaia” comes from the stony soil, destined to go far — culminating in DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia recognition.

The 2021 harvest benefited from a very positive seasonal evolution. Autumn was rainy and below average in temperature, followed by a harsh winter, especially in mid-February when the “Burian” polar air brought negative temperatures both at night (peaks of -5 to -7 °C) and during the day.

April began with spring temperatures, but mid-month brought cold again, approaching 0 °C, affecting early vineyards such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Spring alternated between sun and sporadic rain, with cool temperatures. Vegetative development was not significantly affected, except for a slight slowdown.

The summer began at the end of May and remained dry until mid-July. From mid-August, temperatures returned to normal, slightly below average at night. Vines did not suffer from heat stress, and vegetative growth proceeded regularly, though clusters and berries were smaller, resulting in lower production. This climate produced a perfect balance between technical and phenolic ripeness, with healthy grapes and excellent seed and stem lignification.

Winemaking and Aging:
Hand-harvested from early September (young and early vineyards) to the first week of October (higher altitude plots). Grapes were carefully sorted, gently pressed, and delicately destemmed. Alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeast ended in early November at 28–29 °C, with pump-overs and délestages for optimal extraction and aromatic freshness. Malolactic fermentation, spontaneous, concluded in early December. Wine was then transferred to oak barrels (40% new, 40% first use, 20% second use) of fine-grained French oak, lightly toasted, for 24 months. After aging, the wine was transferred to stainless steel for final blending and further bottle aging before release.

“We believe Sassicaia is one of the greatest wine creations of the century. It is also simply wonderful to drink. May it continue to thrive in the new millennium.”

Tenuta San Guido

Tenuta San Guido is named after the Saint Guido della Gherardesca who lived during the 11th century. It is located on the Tyrrhenian coast between Leghorn and Grosseto in Maremma, an area made famous by Italian Nobel Prize winner Giosuè Carducci, and stretches 13 km from the sea to the hills.

Three are its defining features: the wine of Sassicaia, the meticulous Razza Dormello-Olgiata farm and the Padule di Bolgheri bird sanctuary. They divide the estate between the Padule on the coast, the horse training grounds on the plain, and the vineyards planted up to 350 metres on the hills. The latter have been awarded their own DOC, the DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, the first, and so far only case in Italy of a DOC contained within an estate.
