James Suckling, tasting note published in June 10th 2013

The Sassicaia 2010 has just been released and it is an exceptional bottle. I believe people are going to love this newest Sassicaia. The wine is very aromatic, with notes of currant, dried fruits, cocoa, and hints of wood. It is full-bodied, with intense yet very polished tannins and a long finish. Very refined and beautiful, with a lively finish. The Cabernet Franc is especially noticeable at the finish. Lively. Hard to resist drinking now. The 1968 vintage marked the debut of Sassicaia, a bold wine that, at the time, broke with the traditional winemaking methods in Tuscany.

Tenuta San Guido

The name “Sassicaia” comes from the stony soil from which it originates and, by its nature, is meant to last — culminating in the recognition of the DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia.

On an estate spanning 2,500 hectares, we have chosen to plant vines exclusively in the most suitable parcels, occupying only a small part of the total area. This is a unique area due to its soil type, microclimate, and exposure, deserving its own designation: DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia.

Climate in 2010: The winter was long and harsh, and spring was rainy and cool. This trend led to a delay in flowering and veraison, and consequently slower vegetative development. From the first ten days of June, temperatures were in line with the seasonal average, with large day-to-night fluctuations, favoring aroma development. The correct development of the vines was supported by a very hot and sunny July and the total absence of rain. In August, approximately 70 mm of rainfall was recorded without exceeding 32 degrees.

Harvest: The harvest began 2 to 3 weeks later than in previous years due to the spring delay caused by low temperatures, which was never recovered during the summer. Fine weather, with sunny and breezy days, provided the ideal conditions for harvesting Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The harvest was thus completed in mid-October, with ripe grapes showing excellent polyphenolic development, sugar balance, and low alcohol content, in harmony with our oenological philosophy.

Winemaking: Fermentation in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of around 30–31°C. Two weeks of maceration on the skins, with several pump-overs and délestages. Malolactic fermentation occurred in stainless steel vats. Once malolactic fermentation was complete, the wine was placed in French oak barriques, and a small part in American oak, where it was aged for a period of 20 to 25 months. The duration of aging is technically decided based on the seasonal trend of the vintage.

Tenuta San Guido

Tenuta San Guido is named after the Saint Guido della Gherardesca who lived during the 11th century. It is located on the Tyrrhenian coast between Leghorn and Grosseto in Maremma, an area made famous by Italian Nobel Prize winner Giosuè Carducci, and stretches 13 km from the sea to the hills.

Three are its defining features: the wine of Sassicaia, the meticulous Razza Dormello-Olgiata farm and the Padule di Bolgheri bird sanctuary. They divide the estate between the Padule on the coast, the horse training grounds on the plain, and the vineyards planted up to 350 metres on the hills. The latter have been awarded their own DOC, the DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, the first, and so far only case in Italy of a DOC contained within an estate.
