James Suckling, tasting note published in July 22nd 2023

A very perfumed Sassicaia on the nose, with forest floor, citrus, and deep dark fruits. Blackcurrants, cedar, and black tea. A touch of balsamic and pine needles. Full and very succulent on the palate, with great length, structure, and overall harmony. Tangy and energetic, with a linear thread of fresh tannins and acidity. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc. Very attractive now in its youthful vibrancy, but will show even greater depth in three to four years. Best after 2027.

Sassicaia — History and Terroir
The 1968 harvest marked the debut of Sassicaia, a bold wine that at the time broke away from the traditional winemaking methods of Tuscany.

The name “Sassicaia” comes from the stony soil from which it originates and, by nature, is destined to go far — culminating in the recognition of the DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia.

On an estate spanning 2,500 hectares, we have chosen to plant vineyards exclusively on the most suitable plots, covering only a small portion of the total surface. This is a unique area in terms of soil type, microclimate, and exposure, deserving of its own appellation: DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia.

The soils are varied and complex, with a strong presence of limestone, areas rich in marl and pebbles, as well as partially clayey sections. The vineyards are located between 80 and 400 metres above sea level, with a west/south-west exposure.

2020 Vintage
The seasonal trend was particularly favourable, with virtually no rainfall from early July until the last week of September, allowing for steady ripening that was slightly earlier than average.

Vinification — Harvest began in the first ten days of September and lasted for approximately three weeks. Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of around 30–31°C. Maceration on the skins lasted about two weeks, with several pump-overs and délestages. Malolactic fermentation occurred in stainless steel.

Ageing — The wine began its ageing in early November, remaining for 22 months in French oak barrels, one-third new. It was bottled at the end of October 2022.

“We believe that Sassicaia is one of the greatest wine creations of the century. It also happens to be simply wonderful to drink. May it thrive through the new millennium.”

Tenuta San Guido

Tenuta San Guido is named after the Saint Guido della Gherardesca who lived during the 11th century. It is located on the Tyrrhenian coast between Leghorn and Grosseto in Maremma, an area made famous by Italian Nobel Prize winner Giosuè Carducci, and stretches 13 km from the sea to the hills.

Three are its defining features: the wine of Sassicaia, the meticulous Razza Dormello-Olgiata farm and the Padule di Bolgheri bird sanctuary. They divide the estate between the Padule on the coast, the horse training grounds on the plain, and the vineyards planted up to 350 metres on the hills. The latter have been awarded their own DOC, the DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, the first, and so far only case in Italy of a DOC contained within an estate.
