Quinta do Cardo

The Superior Red Wine from Quinta do Cardo is a DOC Beira Interior wine from high altitudes and organic.

Manufactured with wisdom rooted in nearly 100 years of winemaking knowledge, they stand out for the sensory and cultural experience they offer and their unique personality, brimming with rare quality and integrity. With refined architecture, freshness, lightness, and authenticity, the reds are bold and firm.

The granitic geological matrix of the Beira Interior Plateau imparts to Quinta do Cardo wines a fresh and mineral character.

The organic production method of Quinta do Cardo wines, pioneering in Portugal, allows for the preservation of native fauna and flora, promoting the biodiversity of our agricultural ecosystem, with a strong impact on the final quality of the wines produced here.

In the 1930s, the first wine was produced at Quinta do Cardo, named Branco Maia. In 1988, the first red under the Quinta do Cardo brand was bottled. The brand’s fame skyrocketed, quickly profiling itself among the great Portuguese wines, bringing much prestige and strength to the then unknown Beira Interior.

Red wines from Beira Interior present themselves with a very vibrant red color, aroma with notes of red fruits, especially when young, sometimes accompanied by very delicate floral notes. In terms of body, they are generally very well-balanced, both in the presence of tannins, fixed acidity, and alcohol content, giving them a very interesting harmony, although sometimes a prominent fixed acidity is noted, especially when young. Good mouth persistence and they usually reveal a longevity that allows for late consumption, years after vinification.

Quinta do Cardo

It is on a plateau in Portugal, in Beira Interior, that Quinta do Cardo is located, between the protected landscape of the Douro International Reserve and the historic village of Castelo Rodrigo, half an hour from Foz Côa.

Situated at an altitude of 750 meters, granite, shale, rivers, mountains, fertile valleys, and abundant water mark this land. But also an ancient human occupation and the influence of an inland territory, 150 km from the Atlantic.

The name Quinta do Cardo comes from the large expanses of thistles existing on the property, which were used for cheese production, and which still today make its landscape distinct and lush, in chromatic variations ranging from lilac to radiant gold.

The original houses and cellar, at the entrance of the estate, are marked by a colloquial architecture, with striking colors, while in the rest of the area we find simple dry stone buildings, such as the Casa do Forno, located in the middle of the vineyard, or the small chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony, near the Vineyard of the Chapel. Silence, calm, the slow passage of time, mark this privileged context.

The first vineyards were planted in 1932 and the recognition of the quality of the wines has been constant over the years.

It is here that some of the best Portuguese wine is produced, in a country with a viticultural historical past that dates back to Roman times.
