Quinta da Romaneira

This wine represents the highest expression of the noble Douro grape varieties cultivated at Quinta da Romaneira. Every year, we carefully select the best lots — mainly Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, and occasionally Tinto Cão — from various parcels across the estate to create this limited-edition wine. As such, the Reserva reflects the entire Romaneira vineyard, rather than a specific plot.

Vintage Year: After a cold and dry winter, spring 2018 was particularly rainy, resulting in vigorous vegetative growth in the vineyard. Early summer remained uncharacteristically wet and cool, until the weather shifted to hot and dry conditions leading up to harvest. In August, a heatwave pushed temperatures above 40 °C for several days, adding character and intensity to the grapes. These extreme conditions resulted in a concentrated, aromatic wine that is true to Romaneira’s terroir.

Vinification: This wine is the result of a rigorous selection of grapes harvested from parcels located below 250 meters of altitude — including old vines. The blend consists of 72% Touriga Nacional and 28% Touriga Francesa. Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats over 12 days, followed by malolactic fermentation.

Ageing: 100% of the wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 35% of which were new.

Analytical Parameters: Total Acidity: 5.5 g/dm³ | pH: 3.74 | Residual Sugar: 0.6 g/dm³

Quinta da Romaneira

Romaneira is one of the great historic Quintas of the Douro Valley in Northern Portugal, on a spectacularly beautiful site overlooking the Douro river facing south, its rocky soil lending its particular character to the wines.

Recently a new and exciting chapter has been added to Romaneira’s long and illustrious story, with the emergence of Romaneira as a key player in the “Douro Revolution”: the discovery that our ancient local grape varieties can be used to make not only excellent Port wines, but increasingly also outstanding unfortified wines that are finding their place among the great wines of the world, while being an expression of our unique terroir.

We are proud of the work of our team, who, building on the experience they gained working on the renaissance of nearby Quinta do Noval, have made major improvements to the Romaneira vineyard over time.

We hope this website helps you share our excitement about Romaneira; read on to find out more about our vision for Romaneira, our wines, history, our terroir and vineyard, and the people who make these wines.
