O Produtor, tasting note published in April 23rd 2023

Colour: Black core, purple rim.
Nose: A true aromatic kaleidoscope. Sweet pastries upfront — blueberry danish, chocolate croissant, dusted sugar. Forest fruits (blackberries and mulberries) come through quickly. The faintest touch of formic acid, dried bay leaf, pink peppercorns, and black cardamom add spicy intrigue. Hints of rare roast beef, seared venison loin, coal dust, cocoa powder, and graphite. With a swirl, aniseed and licorice become pronounced.
Palate: Seamless blend of both varietals — neither dominates, both shine in harmony. Black and red fruit compote flavours dominate. Cocoa powder sweetness enriches the mid-palate. Savoury notes of cold salted beef, lamb jus and cured pastrami provide balance. Fine tannins, reminiscent of oolong tea, give structure. Creamy American oak is elegantly integrated. A refreshing acid lift on the finish. Already very approachable, with great cellaring potential.

Penfolds

Penfolds Bin 389 is often referred to as “Baby Grange” — not just because it’s matured in the same barrels that once held the prestigious Grange, but also because it expresses a similar philosophy of structure and finesse. First created in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, Bin 389 quickly became a Penfolds icon, blending the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon (53%) with the richness of Shiraz (47%).

The grapes come from some of South Australia’s finest regions: McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully, and Padthaway. The wine was aged for 12 months in American oak hogsheads (37% new).

The 2022 vintage enjoyed mild conditions, with slow, even ripening that resulted in exceptional fruit quality. Bin 389 2022 showcases Penfolds’ mastery in blending, delivering a complex, balanced wine with great depth and longevity.

Penfolds

Despite great success, Penfolds never rests on its laurels. In 2012 Penfolds released its most innovative project to date – 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon.

Two years later, Penfolds celebrated the 170th anniversary – having just picked up a perfect score of 100 for the 2008 Grange in two of the world’s most influential wine magazines. Today, Penfolds continues to hold dear the philosophies and legends – ‘1844 to evermore!’.
