Ornellaia
Ornellaia Bolgheri DOC Superiore Rosso 2020 is a fusion of nature and contemplation. Ancient and complex soils converse, through human wisdom, with a delicate microclimate that echoes the presence of the Mediterranean Sea. A prolonged ageing process guides this exceptional wine towards its full expression, revealing finesse and generosity over time.
Vinification and ageing:
Blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The grapes were hand-picked into 15 kg boxes, then carefully sorted by hand — both before and after destemming — followed by gentle crushing. Since 2016, optical sorting has been introduced to further enhance selection quality.
Each grape variety and each vineyard plot were vinified separately. Fermentation took place in stainless steel and concrete tanks at temperatures between 26 and 30°C, lasting around one week, followed by approximately 15 days of maceration — about three weeks in total.
Malolactic fermentation occurred mainly in French oak barrels (70% new, 30% second use). The wine was then aged in barrels, in Ornellaia’s temperature-controlled cellars, for approximately 18 months. After the first 12 months, the lots were blended and returned to barrel for an additional 6 months. Once bottled, the wine aged for another 12 months before release.
Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista 2020 – “La Proporzione”
The Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista special edition celebrates the unique character of each vintage. Every year, a contemporary artist is invited to create a work of art and a series of limited-edition labels inspired by a single word chosen by the winemaker to describe the spirit of the vintage.
For Ornellaia 2020, the 15th edition of Vendemmia d’Artista, the chosen word was “La Proporzione” (The Proportion), evoking the perfect balance between the parts and the whole.
The selected artist, Joseph Kosuth, focused his interpretation on the word “wine” in various Indo-European languages, creating a comparative tree of its diverse forms. The etymology of the word is traced through the parallel transformations of linguistic communities, suggesting an underlying unity beneath an apparent multiplicity, expressed through morphological structure.
This approach is then juxtaposed with a quotation from Vitruvius’s masterpiece, De Architectura, thus symbolically completing the grammatical circle of the concept of proportion.
