Niepoort
Poeirinho originates from Bairrada, a region with a cool, humid climate strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, ideal for grape varieties like Baga, which has captivated Dirk Niepoort since the 1990s. The old vines, around 100 years old, contribute to the authentic expression of this unique terroir.
Poeirinho, the old name for the Baga grape, is a tribute to the great Bairrada wines of the past — light in colour and alcohol, but with remarkable ageing capacity. Dirk Niepoort’s deep passion for this variety and the Bairrada terroir led him to search for small plots of very old Baga vines around the Cantanhede area.
The 2021 vintage was marked by unexpected rains, which complicated disease control and required strict vineyard management. The spring brought heat spikes that accelerated ripening and led to an early harvest, from August 26th to September 26th. It was a year defined by wines with balanced acidity, high colour intensity and lower alcohol levels compared to 2020.
Vinification and ageing: Poeirinho comes from several plots of very old vines trained in Guyot, with a planting density of 2500 vines per hectare, at sea level. The harvest was manual. Vinification occurred partly in open lagares and partly in closed tanks, using carbonic maceration. Fermentation lasted four weeks and finished in used foudres, where malolactic fermentation and a 25-month ageing also took place. Bottled in November 2023, unfiltered.
Perfect with traditional dishes such as roast kid, oven-baked cod, charcuterie-based recipes, or vegetarian dishes rich in legumes.
