O Produtor, tasting note published in May 27th 2025

The 2021 vintage reveals a Marqués de Murrieta with vibrant character. On the nose, redcurrant and blackberry intertwine with rosemary and spearmint over a backdrop of cedar and spices. On the palate, it stands out for its structured freshness, with elegant acidity and smooth tannins that melt into a finish of wild berries and creamy raspberry. This DOCa Rioja wine reflects the elegance, solidity, and consistency that are the hallmarks of Marqués de Murrieta – one of Spain’s most renowned wines.

Marqués de Murrieta

Grape Origin:
Grapes are mostly sourced from our Ygay Estate: 300 hectares of vineyards surrounding the winery in the southernmost point of Rioja Alta, with predominantly calcareous-clay soils. Altitude ranges from 320 to 485 meters.

Winemaking:
The harvest is manual. The blend is composed of 86% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano, 4% Mazuelo, and 2% Garnacha. Grapes are de-stemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 8 to 10 days, with constant skin contact. During fermentation, regular pump-overs and punch-downs are carried out to ensure an effective yet gentle extraction of color and aromas. After fermentation, the solid parts of the grapes are pressed in a vertical press—a gentle process that extracts color and ripe tannins from the skins.

Ageing:
26 months in 225-litre American oak barrels.

Food Pairing Suggestions:
Perfect with hake dishes (try it with lightly smoked hake kokotxa with pil-pil, olive, and soy sauce); chickpea dishes with white truffle; or grilled baby squid with herbs and olive oil.

Marqués de Murrieta

Marqués de Murrieta´s foundation is linked to the origins of the Rioja wines since Luciano Murrieta produced in 1852 the first Rioja wine and was also the first one to export his wines. Luciano, appointed Marquis by the King Amadeo of Savoy thanks to his work in Rioja, travelled to Bordeaux to learn the winemaking techniques that he introduced later in Spain. He established the concept of “château” in the Ygay Estate where he built the emblematic Ygay Castle. In 1983 Vicente Cebrián Sagarriga, tenth Count of Creixell, took over the project. He modernized the winery and with his entrepreneurial vocation he continued the legacy of Marqués de Murrieta. After his death his eldest son, Vicente D. Cebrián-Sagarriga, current Count of Creixell, assumed together with his sister Cristina the management of the winery, accompanied by a young and qualified team. Over the years, the Count of Creixell´s family has become the perfect continuity to maintain the balance between tradition and modernity positioning Marqués de Murrieta in the 21st century in a privileged position in the world.
