Maçanita
A dyeing variety (i.e. with colour in the pulp) from the North of the country – “it is said to come from the banks of the river Lima” – Girão wrote in 1822. He also says that it is so colourful that one can use the skins “to make an excellent dye to cover the wines lacking colour”, as if describing the current role of Sousão in the Douro. Further north, the same variety with the virile name of Vinhão, is drunk raw, extreme, rough and proud as a bastion of the last signs of rurality. So is this Sousão or Vinhão?
