O Produtor, tasting note published in September 12th 2023

The 2022 Amphora Tinto is medium-bodied, with a vibrant profile of fresh red fruit, wild herbs, and delicate spice. Tannins are present yet refined, and the natural acidity brings energy and precision. To further celebrate individuality, the label was designed by the talented Pedro Almeida, making each bottle both a reflection of history and a work of art.

Hugo Mendes

A tribute to Alentejo’s ancient talha winemaking tradition. Produced in Vila Alva — a place deeply rooted in this ancestral practice — the wine was created in partnership with friends at XXVI Talhas, reinforcing a spirit of community, shared passion, and authenticity.

Crafted from Aragonês, Trincadeira, and other carefully selected indigenous Portuguese varieties, it reflects the region’s unique character. The vines grow in limestone and clay soils and benefit from the Atlantic influence, ensuring a balanced ripening that preserves freshness and natural acidity.

Fermentation takes place in large clay amphorae, following the traditional method that allows gentle skin contact to extract fine tannins and complex aromas. This slow micro-oxygenation results in a silky texture and layered depth, without any oak influence. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, preserving its raw authenticity and subtle earthy and mineral nuances.

This wine is a journey through time, deeply rooted in the culture of talhas. A true expression of friendship, tradition, and minimal-intervention winemaking, it is a testament to Hugo Mendes’ commitment to wines that speak of place and people.

Hugo Mendes

Born and raised in Ribeira de Santarém, Hugo Mendes studied Biotechnological Engineering but his passion for wines spoke louder and since the 2006 vintage he has been fully dedicated to oenology. A lover of communicating art to consumers, he is a regular presence on social networks. Since 2008 he feeds a blog dedicated to uncomplicate oenology for oenophiles. He became a producer in his own name at the 2016 harvest, and for that he carried out the first crowdfunding, in Portugal, to finance a wine.
