Grand Bateau, or in the translation, the big boat, has a deep and intense red look and reveals good balance and elegance, with an aroma of red fruits such as strawberries and cherries, as well as spices and smoked touches. It has fine tannins and a persistent aftertaste.

Grand Bateau

Grand Bateau is born from a unique terroir: the heart of the vineyard lies on two deep Garonne gravel mounds, typical of the Médoc, which store the day’s heat and ensure excellent drainage. The proximity to the Gironde estuary regulates the climate and protects the vines, creating ideal conditions for the perfect ripening of the grapes.

The vines have an average age of around 30 years, and planting density ranges from 8,300 to 10,000 vines per hectare. The grape variety mix follows Bordeaux tradition: 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. Harvesting is done by hand, and each parcel is carefully tended to reflect the identity of its terroir.

Environmental responsibility is central to the estate’s philosophy, with ISO 14001 certification and sustainable farming practices.

To meet the evolving demands of viticulture and winemaking, Château Beychevelle recently built a new winery — known in Bordeaux by the French term chai — that combines tradition with innovation. The building, with its modern lines and large glass surfaces, is inspired by the nautical world and the legend of the Duke of Épernon, whose ties to the navy gave rise to the name “Beychevelle” (baisse voile, or “lower the sails”).

This new facility enables plot-by-plot vinification, with gentle extraction and precise temperature control, allowing the wines to fully express their depth and complexity.

Château Beychevelle

With origins dating back to 1565, Château Beychevelle is an unmissable name in the Médoc. Over more than three centuries, this Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé has been shaped by influential figures — from the first Duke of Épernon to the Heine family, not forgetting notable women like Marie-Amélie Kohn and Elisabeth de Foucaud, who contributed to its charm, hospitality, and refinement.

Today, under the stewardship of Grands Millésimes de France (Castel and Suntory), Château Beychevelle continues to impress both with the elegance of its wines and the beauty of its gardens, as well as the artistic spirit that has always animated it. As Robert Parker said in 1990, “The wines of Beychevelle can be as beautiful as the magnificent flowering gardens that surround them.”

The estate covers 250 hectares, about 90 of which are planted with vines. The remainder of the land includes meadows where Limousin cows graze, and wooded areas with pine, ash, poplar, and walnut trees — a living landscape that expresses the balance between nature and viticultural culture.
