Gianni Gagliardo
An exceptional Barolo, aged for five years in wood. Produced only in truly outstanding vintages, this Barolo Riserva 2005 is made from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the Lazzarito (Serralunga d’Alba) and Mosconi (Monforte d’Alba) vineyards. Each parcel was vinified separately, with maceration lasting 8 to 12 days, spontaneous fermentation, and ageing in wood for five years — the first 12 months in small barrels, followed by 12 months in large casks.
After blending in 2006, the wine revealed a profile of great structure, depth, and elegance, with firm tannins and excellent ageing potential.
An unusual but promising vintage:
The 2005 growing season was marked by strong climatic contrasts: a very hot early summer followed by a cool, dry August, which favoured balanced ripening. By September, the grapes were in excellent condition, with high sugar levels and well-developed colour and aroma compounds. The only concern was the thinness of the skins, which increased the risk of rot if rains came. As a precaution, the harvest was brought forward — and rightly so: on October 2nd, heavy rains arrived and continued for a week. Fortunately, the wine was already fermenting safely in the cellar, ensuring yet another outstanding vintage.
