Eisele Vineyard
Winter 2017 ended a drought that had persisted for five years. However, fewer storms in the second half of the wet season resulted in normal bud break. Canopy growth was impressive as the vines utilised the available water and moderate temperatures in April. A mild spring saw the last flowering since 2012. Vigour was slowed with a first heatwave in June, which also resulted in a reduction in berry size across the ranch. The following summer was warmer than usual, and veraison started slowly in early August. Fruit ripening followed the intense pace of the summer heat in a ”stop and go” pattern, resulting in fruit with great concentration and freshness. Precise sorting was used in the cellar so that only berries in perfect condition reached the vats. Small berries along with uncompromising selection meant a 35% yield reduction compared to 2016.
