Abegoaria Wines, S.A.

The Alentejo is the birthplace of Abegoaria, and it is here that the greatest diversity of projects can be found, as varied as they are rich in experiences. The Granja Amareleja winery is a symbol of tradition and quality for wines from the left bank of the Guadiana. Amareleza Vinhos embodies the irreverence of its main creator, winemaker José Piteira, an undisputed master of ancestral winemaking techniques in the region – the famous talha wines. Herdade da Madeira Velha is a benchmark for quality wines from Évoramonte.

Our Vidigueira wines are born in one of the most unique and emblematic sub-regions of the Alentejo, known for producing wines of outstanding quality and strong personality. Herdade do Gamito is one of our most recent projects in the Alentejo. But the true jewel of the project is the 500-hectare Herdade Abegoaria dos Frades, in Alqueva, from where the finest wines will emerge—shaped by the terroir and crafted by the expertise of the best winemakers.

The same drive to restore dignity to genuinely national products led us to explore the country and invest in projects that remain faithful to these principles. From the Alijó Winery in the Douro to the Penalva Winery, a benchmark of elegance in Dão wines, passing through Ponte da Barca Winery (Vinhos Verdes), Meda Winery (Beira Interior), Dois Portos Winery (Lisbon), and finally Lagoa Winery (Algarve).

Quinta Vale de Fornos is another of our emblematic projects. With a complex terroir, located at the transition between the Tejo and Lisbon regions, it offers unique conditions for producing exceptional wines. With traditional marble lagares from the 18th century and an impressive collection of wooden barrels, the wines from this estate have captivated international critics.

In 2021, the group’s most ambitious project was realized—the acquisition of Vidigal Wines. This company is strongly positioned in international markets, operating in nearly 40 countries and boasting highly successful brands. After expanding production to almost every wine region in the country, this acquisition reinforced and consolidated Abegoaria’s diversification, providing it with a solid boost in global markets.

In 2022, in the fine wine category, the Eruptio wines were launched. This marked Abegoaria’s first venture into the islands, particularly on Pico Island (Azores), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Eruptio wines are the liquid expression of a volcanic and Atlantic terroir, honest and full of nuances, reflecting their unique origins.

“Portugal has been blessed with good fortune. The diversity of its landscape, its wines, its gastronomy, its people, and its traditions is an inexhaustible treasure. In each of our projects, we seek the roots of this land. We work with local communities. We restore heritage that would otherwise be lost in a globalized world. We pursue authenticity and genuineness to create eno-gastronomic experiences with a true sense of origin. To understand our products is to understand their origins—beautiful in their diversity and distinctiveness.
