Barbeito
The Malvasia Candida was one of the first grape varieties introduced in Madeira. In the year 1455 the Venetian navigator Alvise de Cadamosto, carried out his first voyage in the service of Prince Henry the Navigator. During his passage through the island he described the variety among the many vineyards he observed in Madeira. According to his reports, “wines were already being produced, very, very good wines, if one considers that the island has only been inhabited for a short time. There are so many of them, that they are enough for those of the island and many of them are exported”. Faia dos Padres is the only area where we can still find vines of Malvasia Candida. The Jesuit priests found in the area of this fajã the ideal place to grow vines of this type. A privileged place, unique even, where the land reaches the sea, hidden by a cliff almost 500m high, which remains to this day.
