July brings us two great reasons to raise a glass and toast with tropical flavour.
July 11 marks Mojito Day, a Cuban classic that continues to win over palates with its refreshing taste. The following day, July 12, is World Rum Day, celebrating this ancestral and versatile spirit that gives life to iconic cocktails — from the Old Fashioned to the Mai Tai.
At Vinha.co.uk, we’re embracing this double celebration by sharing a few recipes you can recreate at home. From the lightest and freshest to the richest and boldest, choose the style that suits you best.
Mojito
A fresh, classic, and refreshing cocktail. Try this version straight from Madeira.
Ingredients:
2 shots of rum (try Rum North Natural)
Ice
½ lime
10 mint leaves
1 teaspoon white sugar
Sparkling water
(Optional: a dash of eucalyptus liqueur)
Preparation:
Squeeze half a lime directly into the glass. Add sugar and mint, then gently muddle with a pestle. Add ice and rum, stir well, and top with sparkling water. For a unique aromatic twist, try adding a few drops of eucalyptus liqueur.
Chairman’s Julep
Elegance and freshness in one glass.
Ingredients:
6 cl Chairman’s Reserve (your choice of expression)
6 to 8 mint leaves + generous sprigs for garnish
0.75 cl simple syrup or cane syrup
Preparation:
In a metal julep cup or highball glass, add the mint and syrup and lightly muddle. Add rum and crushed ice, stir gently. Top with more ice and garnish with a bouquet of mint.
Chairman’s Old Fashioned
The classic cocktail, reinvented with rum.
Ingredients:
6 cl Chairman’s Reserve
1 teaspoon sugar
3 dashes Angostura bitters
Large orange peel (zest)
Preparation:
Muddle the sugar and bitters in an old fashioned glass. Add one or two large ice cubes, pour in the rum, and stir. Finish with an orange zest twist.
Whether you’re sipping a Mojito by the sea or enjoying an Old Fashioned at sunset, rum is always a fine companion.
