On June 3rd, we celebrate those who truly know what they’re choosing. We mark International Sommelier Day with an exclusive selection recommended by Rodolfo Tristão, sommelier at Vinha. Wines with identity, elegance and soul — crafted to surprise even the most discerning palates.

Whether at a Michelin-starred restaurant or a dinner among friends, there’s always someone who knows exactly which wine to pick. On Sommelier Day, we raise a glass to them.

The sommelier’s choice

Did you know…?

The word sommelier comes from Old French and originally referred to the person in charge of the wine in royal courts. Today, it’s a symbol of knowledge, passion, and sharing at the table.

In Portugal, however, we use a term with equally noble roots: Escanção. This traditional title referred to the trusted figure who selected and served wines to the king.

It is said that the first known Portuguese escanção was Martim Moniz, a historical figure representing bravery and service to a higher cause. Today’s modern escanção continues that tradition — with precision, sensitivity, and deep knowledge.
