Quinta da Raza

Quinta da Raza is located in Lugar de Peneireiros, Celorico de Basto, in the Vinho Verde Region (DOC), in the Northwest of Portugal.
It features a microclimate created by the Marão mountain range and adjacent mountains, as well as by the Tâmega River that passes through the region, which, when combined, prevent the influence of the Atlantic winds

Quinta da Raza’s slopes are unusually gentle and have a magnificent sun exposure. Moreover, the average altitude of Quinta da Raza is 250 meters and its soil benefits from its granite origins with areas of schist and clay, not very common for a Vinho Verde Region. Combined, these factors create this unique terroir, highlighting the vineyard’s culture due to the quality of the grapes produced, from Azal, Arinto and Vinhão to Alvarinho.

Its history dates back to the 17th century and has always been a part of the Teixeira Coelho family. The main productions of Casa do Outeiro were, traditionally, vines, forestry, beef cattle, cereals and apple orchards. Still, the culture of the vineyard was already given greater emphasis by its quality and economic importance.

Diogo Teixeira Coelho, one of the descendants of this family, is passionate about the wonderful world of wines and soon perceived the unique wine characteristics of the region of Basto. Thus, in 1987, Diogo Teixeira Coelho developed his winemaking activity, and in 2008 he was considered by the CVRVV (Viniculture Committee of the Vinhos Verdes Region) as the “Young Winemaker of the Year”.

Using state-of-the-art technology, Quinta da Raza preserves the traditional techniques of producing green wines – manual harvest – giving primary importance to the preservation of the environment.

Quinta da Raza won the prize for best vineyard in 1999 at the International Fair of Galiza, Spain, and it was also a prize-winner, in 2002, 2003, 2007, 2009 and 2011 at the Contest of the “Viticulture Commission of the Vinho Verde Region”. Furthermore, the wines produced exclusively with the Quinta da Raza’s grapes have been awarded over several competitions and magazines of the specialty.
