On May 9th, we celebrate World Moscato Day — the perfect occasion to discover (or rediscover) one of the oldest, most aromatic and versatile grape varieties in the world of wine: Moscato, known as Moscatel in Portugal and Muscat in English and French.
What makes the Moscato grape so special?
Moscato is a family of grapes known for producing highly aromatic, fresh and exuberant wines. Native to the Mediterranean basin, this grape has won over wine lovers across continents thanks to its unmistakable profile: fresh grape, orange blossom, honey, peach and soft spice notes.
It is an incredibly versatile grape, used in everything from light, sweet sparkling wines — like the famous Moscato d’Asti — to fortified wines such as Portugal’s Moscatel de Setúbal, and even dry, aromatic versions ideal for warm days.
Moscato or Moscatel?
Though the name varies depending on origin, it refers to the same great grape family. In Portugal, standouts include Moscatel de Alexandria and Moscatel Galego Branco, which produce intensely perfumed wines with great gastronomic potential.
