O Produtor, tasting note published in May 27th 2017

It is a traditional wine and less aromatic, compared to some whites that can be found today in the market, but at the same time fresh and modern. The style of the white wines are always in the same line - a good acidity, structure and minerality - every year we are making small quantities of the same vineyards with the same winemaking. Very complex nose, white fruit notes. In the mouth test it shows more expressive, very rich attack, aromatic and fresh but balanced by phenolic nuances and excellent acidity. Balanced and long and a very serious wine.

The idea: Quinta das Bandeiras is a 100 hectare property located in Pocinho, next to the river Douro and opposite the famous Vale Meão. With Bandeiras grapes, we embarked on a 50:50 adventure with Jorge Moreira, to produce and market the wine. The wine will be named Passage – appropriate for several reasons. There is a train line with an abandoned level crossing on the property. And Passage also portrays the journey and experience of two distinct families in the Douro: the Bergqvist (English) family and the Moreira (Portuguese) family. Variety of Grape Varieties: Grapes from old vines, at an altitude of 400 m, from the traditional white wine grape varieties, namely Viosinho, Gouveio, Rabigato, Códega do Larinho and others. Production Notes: As in most of Europe, we had a very cold and wet spring and an early summer early. The flowering was postponed and we had to keep an eye out for possible mildew attacks. A wet new year followed a hot and dry summer. There was little wind, unusual for us, as a rule the wind only rises during the afternoons. No thunderstorms and no rain until 12/13 September. The vineyard held up surprisingly well, helped by the spring rain. Only the younger vines with less developed root systems suffered more. The cold, wet spring meant that everything was delayed for at least two weeks, Hot days (25C) but cool nights provided the ideal conditions for ripening the grape. Jorge had to take special care in choosing the grape precisely because there was uneven ripening in the vineyard. Small but focused picks, we were able to choose section by section. Process of maturation and aging: Jorge Moreira’s philosophy is to understand the potential of the vineyard and understand the best style of wine that can be produced from these grapes. When making the Passage, Jorge has an approach regarding the white wines that are produced with the grapes of the Rose. The wine stays 2/3 days of contact with the bark and is aged in French oak barrels used for 8 months. The wine was bottled in May 2017.

Quinta de La Rosa

Quinta de la Rosa has been in the Bergqvist family since 1906, although they have been in the port trade as shippers under the family name, Feueheerd, since 1815. It currently has around 55 hectares under vine and produces around 50,000 litres of port and 160,000 litres of table wine each year.

Quinta de la Rosa was given as a christening present for Claire Feueheerd, Sophia’s grandmother, in 1906. The family port shipping company, Feueheerd, was sold in the 1930s but La Rosa was kept and run by Sophia’s grandmother, Claire. In 1988 Sophia and her father, Tim Bergqvist, decided to restart the family business and launched Quinta de la Rosa as a top quality port producer onto the market place.

Starting in the early 1990s, the Bergqvist famuly were one of the pioneers in taking red wine production in the Douro region seriously. Quinta de la Rosa’s wines, both red and white, have won many accolades in the press and are sold in many prestigious restaurants and wine stores around the world. Since 2002, Jorge Moreira, one of the finest wine makers in Portugal, has been making wines at La Rosa.

Quinta de la Rosa is situated in Northern Portugal, 100kms inland from Oporto. It is set in the heart of the Alto Douro ‘A’ grade port growing area and is located along the banks of the river, near Pinhão.
