The Symington family has been among the pioneers of modern Douro wines. In the 1990s, they began producing Douro DOC wines from the same vineyards and indigenous grape varieties that have always produced excellent Port wines.

Altano whites are made with some grapes from selected farmers with vineyards in higher-altitude areas. Every year, winemakers are challenged to produce wines that best reflect the diversity of their vineyards, selecting the most suitable grapes depending on the conditions and characteristics of the year.

In a region with 21,400 farmers, the 26 Quintas are an exceptional guarantee of quality, providing the viticulture and winemaking teams with a level of control and choice unique in the region. This is reflected in the excellent quality of Altano wines.

A newly planted vineyard takes time to produce great wines and often requires a lifetime’s work to yield best results. The Symington family, with Scottish, English and Portuguese ancestry has been present in the Douro for five generations — since 1882 — and through the current generation’s great grandmother, the family’s links to the wines of the Douro span 14 generations, to the mid-17th century and to the very beginnings of the history of Port.
