Opus
Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the legendary owner of Château Mouton Rothschild, and by the renowned Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi. By combining the great winemaking traditions and innovations of both families, the founders’ singular goal was to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley. Opus One, like any great work, was born of passion. Dedicated to uncompromising quality, its mission is to express this vision and passionate spirit for generations to come.
The Year 2016
The year 2016 marked the fifth consecutive year of severe drought in Northern California. However, the Oakville estate was fortunate to receive 28 inches of rain, most of which fell before March, creating ideal conditions for early budbreak, which began on March 7th. Conditions in August were perfect for grape ripening, and moderate temperatures persisted until harvest, with only a brief heat spike in early September. Harvest began on September 9th, under mild conditions, allowing the vineyard team to work at a steady, selective pace. As temperatures increased, the pace of harvest quickened, and it was completed in just 33 days, on October 12th.
Vinification
The blend of Opus One 2016 consists of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 8% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Malbec. The skin contact lasted for 17 days.
Barrel Aging
The wine was aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.
