Taylor´s
The 2018 vineyard cycle was unusual and had a marked effect on the character of the wine. The previous year was very dry and hot and by 15 January almost two thirds of the country was suffering from drought, with the Douro Valley
one of the worst affected areas. Fortunately, heavy rains in March prevented damage to the vines and replenished the groundwater reserves. The growing season from March to the end of June was relatively cool and wet
cool and wet, causing mildew in some areas. The devastating hail storm on 28 May caused extensive damage to vineyards in the Pinhão region, including Taylor’s Quinta do Junco
region, including Taylor’s Quinta do Junco. Vine development was about three weeks behind that of 2017, with flowering occurring at the end of May and harvesting in the last week of July. Hot and dry conditions prevailed throughout
July, followed by a very intense heat wave in August. On August 3rd the weather station at Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas recorded a temperature of over 44°C. The extreme heat allowed the vines
to recover some lost time and the abundant groundwater accumulated earlier in the year meant that, despite the hot conditions, the ripening of the harvest was gradual and balanced. The harvest at Quinta de Vargellas
at Quinta de Vargellas started on the 17th September under hot and dry weather that continued throughout the harvest. Yields were very low and the winemaker’s notes report that the new wines displayed
elegance, freshness of fruit, good acidity and intense colour.
