O Produtor, tasting note published in May 27th 2018

The Redoma Reserva Branco 2018 fermented spontaneously in French oak barrels where it also underwent partial malolactic fermentation and a 9-month-long maturation period. Having fermented and aged in barrels on its fine lees, this Redoma Reserva boasts flawless structure, which in combination with its acidity, makes for a beautifully elegant and multifaceted wine. Distinct floral aromas harmonise beautifully with the oak, leading to a vibrant and electric palate and lastly, a lingering and subtly saline finish.

Redoma

The Redoma Reserva comes from vineyards which are more than 80 years old, planted in mica-schist soils at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. Since its first edition in 1995, the main objective in producing this wine has been to reflect the character of the Douro’s old vines. The best barriques were selected for the wine’s maturation in order to guarantee minerality, complexity and ageing potential. 2018 was a relatively cool year up until August, with the coolest July recorded in the 21st century. The vines seemed to be developing relatively late, with a delay of about 3 weeks compared to 2017. The first days of August brought a sudden spike in temperatures: the 4th of August was the hottest year to date this century. As a result, the berries ripened slowly during the month of September. The water stress caused the vines to produce musts with low alcohols and good phenolic ripeness, as well as good complexity and minerality. The white wine grapes were picked between 5 September and 2 October.

Niepoort Vinhos

The Niepoort family has been creating Port Wines since 1842. The first property in Douro was bought in 1987 and Dirk Niepoort started a new Era in the company with the creation of the first Redoma red in 1991. In the last years Niepoort took on the great challenge of interpreting other soils and climates and acquired two properties in other regions, Dão and Bairrada. Discover the Niepoort Triangle which express the different terroirs: Schist (Douro), Limestone (Bairrada) and Granite (Dão).
