O Produtor, tasting note published in October 23rd 2017

With a clean, bright appearance and an intense garnet color, this wine is complex, deep, and elegant. It reveals aromas of great complexity, with aromatic nuances that combine forest fruits, balsamic notes, and spices. On the palate, it is deep, elegant, and complex, with a long and elegant finish.

Vilarissa Valley

The vine’s growth cycle began earlier than usual. 2014 was a challenging year for viticulture, but in the end, we achieved intense aromas, excellent concentration, freshness, and a strong tannin structure with high sophistication.

Vinification: The grapes were transported in 20kg boxes to the winery and immediately cooled in a refrigerated chamber. After cooling, the grapes were selected on the sorting table, followed by partial destemming and crushing in a mechanical lagar with temperature control, where skin maceration occurred for about 24 hours. They were then transferred to stainless steel vats, where fermentation was completed. 95% of the batch aged in French oak barrels for 24 months, and 5% in stainless steel vats for 7 months. The 225L barrels used for aging are 65% new and 35% second-use.

Pairing: Perfect with grilled or roasted red meats, game, and aged or creamy cheeses. It may form a slight deposit due to aging in the bottle.

Van Zeller Wine Collection, SA

Van Zeller Wine Collection (formerly Barão de Vilar, Vinhos S.A.), a company that represents a collection of values, ideas, stories, and wines. The meeting point between tradition, through the know-how of the Van Zeller family in the wine sector, and innovation, with a strong emphasis on the differentiation and uniqueness of its wines and presentations.

The known origins of the van Zeller family date back to the 13th century, in the Flemish cities of Mechelen and Nijmegen, where they owned some properties, particularly in the village of Zeller. In the 17th century, in the aftermath of the religious wars that ravaged Northern and Central Europe, the van Zellers emigrated to Spain and Portugal, countries where they settled.

Their connection to the wine business dates back to the early 17th century, according to the Imposition Books (1620-1640) that mention the merchants Jorge Fernandes and his son-in-law Francisco da Silva Moura, ancestors of the Portuguese branch of the family, as among the largest wine merchants recorded at the time. These ancestors of the van Zeller family are the first known of an unbroken series of 14 consecutive generations that have been, and still are, dedicated to the trade of Douro wines and Port wines, an unprecedented fact in any other “dynasty” of Portuguese families involved in the wine business.

At the center of all this is always the prestigious wine collection, composed of iconic brands and timeless wines, Barão de Vilar, Palmer, Feuerheerd’s, ZOM, Kaputt, Maynard’s, Vilarissa, and Quinta do Saião.
