Don Ditter, tasting note published in September 1st 2008

Initially the 'lively' black fruits of a Christmas pudding or baked fruit cake mix demand attention. But there is much more to complement these fruits - ironstone impressions, graphite, iodine, black ink, and a black pudding viscosity. Formidable, knitted tannins - texturally hive-like, without the honey! The oak intertwined invisibly. Yes, each cask still new, and the completion of fermentation off skins in cask as the Grange modus operandi. Integrated, measured... and clearly more than a sip needed to get an authentic 'first-impression'. Certainly a wine of its vintage.

The original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy, Grange is arguably
Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Crafted utilising fully-ripe,
intensely-flavoured and structured shiraz grapes, the result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines.

With an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951, Grange clearly demonstrates the synergy between shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia. 18 months in 100% New American Oak Hogsheads

Despite great success, Penfolds never rests on its laurels. In 2012 Penfolds released its most innovative project to date – 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon.

Two years later, Penfolds celebrated the 170th anniversary – having just picked up a perfect score of 100 for the 2008 Grange in two of the world’s most influential wine magazines. Today, Penfolds continues to hold dear the philosophies and legends – ‘1844 to evermore!’.
