O Produtor, tasting note published in February 1st 2019
Deep violet color. Expressive in aroma: a combination of intense notes of spice and spices with a resinous touch. Rich and complex in taste, combining notes of wild berries with an excellent natural acidity in a long and persistent finish.
Churchill’s red wine is produced from grapes grown on the Company’s vineyards in the Douro Region (40% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca and 30% Tinta Roriz). About 30% of this wine is aged for 12 months in both new and old French oak casks; the remaining part is kept in stainless steel vats to maintain its fruity character combined with the oak complexity from the wines in casks. Estates Douro Red 2012 pairs well with Red meat dishes.
Churchill’s was founded in 1981 by John Graham, making it the first Port Wine Company to be established in 50 years. The Founder wanted to continue his family’s long Port tradition but at the same time create his own individual style of Port. He named the Company after his wife, Caroline Churchill. Buying Quinta da Gricha in 1999 was an important and fundamental step for bringing Churchill’s into the production of Douro wines, and making them a special case of success.
