In the picturesque village of Redondo, at the heart of Alentejo, stands the Herdade da Candeeira, a project that blends tradition and modernity, bringing a new light to the region’s winemaking.
An Estate with History
With deep roots, Herdade da Candeeira is one of the oldest properties in Serra d’Ossa. Nearby lies the iconic “Anta da Candeeira,” a megalithic monument dating back to 4000–3000 BC. Made of schist slabs with a still-intact polygonal chamber, this historic treasure fascinates with its mysterious “soul hole,” an enigmatic opening in the headstone.
The winemaking tradition of these lands is equally legendary, as evidenced by the estate’s oldest vineyard, planted in 1938. This rich heritage inspired Luís Vieira, administrator of the Parras Wines Group, to invest in Herdade da Candeeira in 2014. Spanning 180 hectares, including approximately 70 hectares of vineyards, the estate has become the group’s strategic base in Alentejo.
In 2015, the project expanded further with the acquisition of the Vinha da Vigia, located just a few kilometers away. This 142-hectare area, exclusively dedicated to red grape varieties, is integrated into the unique landscape of the Vigia Dam while preserving the rich local biodiversity.
Innovation and Sustainability Hand in Hand
Herdade da Candeeira combines traditional practices with cutting-edge technology. From agro-meteorological stations and smart irrigation systems to an automated winery, the production focuses on efficiency and quality. This approach aligns with the certification of the “Alentejo Wines Sustainability Program,” reaffirming the commitment to environmental preservation and responsible resource management.
